#1 Brentwood 76  #9 Independence 21

A week-long layoff was no issue for fifth-ranked Brentwood in the district quarterfinals on Monday night, as they cruised to a 76-21 win over Independence in the early game. The Lady Bruins used a high-pressure defense and made the most of transition opportunities in the win. Junior Sydney Ryan led all scorers with 26 points, while Princeton signee Amelia Osgood hit four 3-pointers en route to a 24-point performance for Brentwood. Kate Workman added nine points, six rebounds and five assists in the win. Evy Nichols scored nine to pace the Lady Eagles. Independence’s young group had no answer for the Lady Bruins defense in the first half, as they were held scoreless in the second quarter and trailed 46-6 at the half. Brentwood came away with 17 steals, led by Osgood's seven. The Lady Bruins will host Summit on Tuesday. Independence advanced to the quaterfinals with a 37-12 win over Centennial on Sunday. The game, initially scheduled to be played at Centennial, was moved due to icy conditions on the Cougars campus.

#2 Page 72  #7 Dickson County 43

Lili Wilken scored 23 points, pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists and Braley Bushman added 13 points, six steals and five assists as the second-seeded Page High School girls basketball team overwhelmed a young Dickson County squad 72-43 in the opening round of the District 11-AAA basketball tournament Monday night in Rudderville. Wilken hit 8-of-11 from the field, but after the game was more concerned about two missed free throws. “I guess it was just one of those nights. But I need to concentrate on my free throws. I was kind of disappointed in that,” the junior said after going 4-of-6 at the line. Sadie Porter (12 points) and Mary Claire Pike (10 points) added double-digit efforts in the win. “We’ve had six girls that have been close to 20 points in a game this year," said veteran Page coach Ron Brock of his shooters. "You can take one away, but you’ve still got to contend with the others. That’s what has made our team this year. And most of them are sophomores,” For all of the offensive power Page put on display, it was the team’s defense that made the win look easy, forcing 14 Dickson County turnovers in the first half and 21 for the game. The Lady Cougars were held to just 32.6% shooting from the floor. Page returns home Tuesday night to face Spring Hill in the district semifinals, with a spot in next week’s Region 6-AAA tourney guaranteed. “The good thing is we are on to our next game and hopefully the championship game and then the region,” Brock said. “With a young team like this, with no seniors, the most important thing is we get to play a bunch of games with a young team that sometimes as three or four sophomores on the court. That’s valuable experience.”
