Nearly 500 high school runners converged on Tuesday at Sanders Ferry Park – the new TSSAA State Cross Country site for this year – for the Division I Large Schools Region 6 meet. The Brentwood High School girls used a just over two-minute split for their top five runners and a split-second top finish from senior Kaitlyn Vanderkolk to capture the team title at the regional, while the Franklin boys prevented a Bruins sweep with a narrow team-title win. Page’s Leigh Walters captured first place in the girls’ race, crossing the finish line in 17 minutes, 59.55 seconds as the only sub-18 female finisher. Independence freshman Jayne Halterman edged Vanderkolk by one, one-hundredth of a second at the finish for second place. Halterman finished in 18:09.33 to Vanderkolk’s 18:09.34. Halterman’s sister, junior Julia, was fourth (18:23.62) and Brentwood’s Brooke Tyll (18:34.34) was fifth. Kevin Vanderkolk was the top Williamson County finisher on the boys side by closing runner-up in 15:49.40. Martin Luther King’s Miles Ally clocked a 15:29 flat to win the region title. Brent Dassow of Centennial (16:18.20), Nick Beattie of Nolensville (16:21.90) and Hudson Hurst of Franklin (16:30.10) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. The top 10 finishers in both races qualified for the state tournament as well as the other members from the top three teams on both the girls and boys sides. The Division I Large Schools cross country championships will also take place at Hendersonville’s Sanders Ferry Park on Nov. 5. The Division I Small Schools championships will follow on Nov. 5 with Division II races scheduled for Nov. 6.
