#1 Brentwood 43  #4 Summit 34

It’s a rare occurrence when either Amelia Osgood or Sydney Ryan don’t lead the Brentwood High School girls basketball team in the scoring column. Fortunately for the Lady Bruins, several others have begun to shine on the hardwood. Kate Workman scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack Tuesday as Brentwood dominated defensively to dispatch Summit and reach the District 11-AAA championship game for a third consecutive season. Osgood added eight points and six assists and Ryan netted four points with six rebounds, but the team approach was the difference Tuesday. “I feel like we are all just starting to really star in our own roles now and that’s beginning to really show,” said Workman, who added six boards and hit five of her six shot attempts. “Amelia, obviously, is an amazing playmaker and she’s distributing the ball, while Sophie (Roston) is in the post and the kind of head of our defense.” Roston added eight points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks. The senior post was honored Tuesday as the all-time leader in blocked shots at Brentwood. Besides working on her vertical jump and foot work, Roston said she’s just trying to step up for her team and own the paint. “We are just trying to impact our game the most in our own ways,” said Roston, who has blocked 90 shots this season. “I just don’t want anyone to score in my paint.” Roston’s 3.3 blocks per game leads the state across all classifications. Lady Bruins coach Myles Thrash likes what he sees, especially on defense. Brentwood bottled up Summit’s leading scorer Delaney Noe and held the senior scoreless Tuesday. “I think last year we were known more for our offense and how well we could shoot the ball,” he said. “This year, we have developed into a really good defensive team.” After an embarrassing 56-37 setback on Jan. 23 at home against Summit, Brentwood has regained its groove. Tuesday’s win over the Lady Spartans was Brentwood’s sixth in a row and improved the team to 23-4 overall. “Sometimes when you play on a team with the Amelia Osgoods and Sydney Ryans, you can get overlooked, but these are some experienced girls,” Thrash said. “Ever since they were freshmen, they have had some big moments and we are putting a lot of expectations on them now.” Brentwood built a 24-10 lead at the half with a smothering defense that allowed just three field goals in the first 16 minutes. The Lady Spartans found some shooting touch in the third quarter and when Bergan Allee connected on a 3-pointer with 1:49 to play, Summit had pulled within 30-20. Kaitlyn Lorenzi responded with a drive and Ryan converted a tough finish plus the foul for a traditional 3-point play to push the lead back to 15. A Workman layup off a feed from Osgood and a Chloe Wampler 3-pointer doubled-up Summit 40-20 by the midway point of the fourth. “We’ve definitely had our ups and downs, but I feel like we just started trusting each other more,” Workman said of the Lady Bruins. “A lot of us have been with each other since seventh grade. I feel like we are finally clicking like we can so it’s starting to all come together.” Myah Kratzig ended the dry spell for Summit with a 3-pointer, but Osgood whipped a no-look pass to Workman for the easy finish for a 42-23 cushion with 3:55 to play. The Lady Bruins coasted the rest of the way. Nicole Rizane powered in a couple buckets down the stretch, while Allee tacked on another and a late Claudette Runk triple closed the scoring. Allee led Summit with eight points. Brentwood will battle Page for the district championship Wednesday.

The Page Lady Patriots used a 22-point 3rd quarter outburst to turn a 29-22 halftime score into a 51-36 lead after three quarters in Tuesday's District Semifinal contest at Page High School. Page, which defeated Spring Hill for the 3rd time this season, will take on Brentwood for the 2nd consecutive year in the District Championship. The Lady Bruins swept the season series with a narrow 54-52 win before Christmas and a 68-52 victory earlier this month. The Lady Patriots edged Brentwood 48-46 in last year’s district final, while the Brentwood girls responded with a 49-38 win in the Region 6-AAA title contest. Page was led in scoring by 1st Team All-District selection McKenzie Cochran with 21 points while 2nd team selection Lili Wilken added 18 points. The District Championship will be played at Brentwood High School with both teams advancing to the 6-AAA Region Touranment on Friday.
