A pair of Coffee County grand slams stopped the Summit High School softball team from playing for a Class AAA state championship in the Lady Spartans first trip to the state tournament. Coffee County’s Kaitlyn Davis and Justus Turner each had base-clearing homers as the Manchester school advanced to the title tilt against Farragut with a 12-4 win Friday morning at the StarPlex Park. The Lady Spartans finished third in the double elimination state tournament. The Lady Red Raiders had defeated Summit’s District 11-AAA rival Dickson County 2-0 in the consolation final Thursday. The Lady Spartans were tipped 5-1 in eight innings against Farragut Thursday in the winner’s bracket final. Farragut went on to win the state title with a 4-2 victory over Coffee County Friday afternoon. The Lady Spartans were without senior pitcher Elena Escobar for the contest. The pitching ace, who is headed to North Alabama, was sidelined after getting stitches in her knee following an injury during the contest against Farragut. Lily Kate Richards managed the circle and kept the Lady Red Raiders at bay until a two-run double in the third where Coffee County gained a 3-2 edge over Summit. Senior Claudette Runk also stepped in at pitcher for an inning before Richards returned in the fifth. The Lady Spartans plated the game’s first two runs in the second on an Emma Beach single, while Abby O’Reilly also drove in a run. Hannah Sundberg, Aldyn Mathis and Claudette Runk each had multiple hits for Summit. A bases-loaded walk made it 4-2 Coffee County in the fourth before Turner blasted the game’s first grand slam with two outs to push the advantage to 8-2. O’Reilly’s RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth made it 8-3, before Davis blew the game open with a second two-out grand slam. Mathis drove in the final Summit run in the bottom of the seventh on a single to center. Keri Munn, a Middle Tennessee State signee, pitched five innings allowing five hits with six strikeouts and three walks surrendering three earned for Coffee County. Richards took the loss going six innings with six Ks, four walks and seven earned on four hits. Summit closed 2-2 in its first state tournament. The Lady Spartans – the District 11-AAA champions and Region 6-AAA runners-up – closed the season with a 25-9 record.
